When I started my business, Kelly Law Media, I was just like most business owners starting out. I had an idea, an income goal, and the skills to get myself there.
What I didn’t have was strategy. Without strategy, I didn’t have a plan. Without a plan, I floundered.
I flip flopped my offers, I changed my price points, I customized what I could (and would) do for what the person in front of me wanted or needed in that moment. Heck, I even took on clients I didn’t really want to work with. Which is… let’s just say, less than ideal.
About 8 months into building my business, I was stressed out, fed up and in grave danger of burning out. I remember being on a call with one of my business besties and telling her, “I think I’m building a business I hate.”
That was a wake-up call moment for me. I was working hard, I was making good money but I was still freaking miserable. It felt... really freakin' bad.
Here’s why:
I was out of alignment with my offer. I was trying to do everything for everyone instead of working in my zone of genius.
I had no real PLAN for the business, even though it felt like I did. I was all over the place, focusing on different things all the time, never really giving any of it a chance to gain traction.
I was doing everything by myself and because I was agreeing to do everything for everyone, I was constantly working IN the business, and never had time to work ON the business.
Do you ever feel like I did?
Like you are working so hard, possibly even gaining some traction, but something just feels… off? I get it.
I had created this business that was one part stuff I absolutely LOVED and 99 parts stuff I liked, tolerated or downright hated. But here’s the kicker, I was making good money. I was in the black and that part felt GOOD.
But it just didn’t feel good enough to keep doing what wasn’t in alignment with my head and my heart. So here’s how I made the pivot.
I sat down with me, myself and I and went deep on exactly what it was in my current business that was really lighting me up.
Then I reflected hard on what it was about the business that was dragging me down, pulling me out of alignment and keeping me from really going “all in”.
I realized I needed a core offer, but not just any offer.
That one part of the business I LOVED? I needed to grab it, hug it like it was my first born home from his far-away duty station, (go Air-Force!) and run with it.
I knew my core offer needed to be valuable, transformative and help more women make a deeper impact.
Once I crafted my new core offer, I went all in. Everything became about the core offer.
My marketing message became crystal clear and I had new potential clients in my inbox on the regular.
I started to look forward to my client sessions the same way I look forward to my husband taking me to Dairy Queen.
Sales calls went from feeling like work to feeling like conversations with new friends. (This is how a sales call feels when you are in alignment with your offer.)
The feedback I got from clients told me THIS was what I was meant to be doing.
The fullness in my heart told me THIS was what I was meant to be doing.
The moral of the story is this, friends... if it feels off, don't be afraid to pivot. Your business is yours and yours alone, don't ever feel like making a change or stepping outside of the box isn't allowed. Your vision, dream, goal is reachable but you need to really tune in to that little voice in your head and your heart telling you which way to go.
I'll leave you with some questions to ask yourself if you feel like you are at a crossroads in your biz. Journal them out and see what you come up with!
