Mindset & Tiny Little Screws

June 23, 20232 min read

I spent my weekend decorating my new home office, an undertaking that had me flying high... at first. I was super excited to amplify my new space. I bought a new desk chair (love), a new rug (obsessed) and a new desk ...which came in exactly one MILLION tiny pieces little ol' me decided I would put together because, how hard could it be?

Well {{contact.first_name}}, it was hard. Really freaking hard but I kept going and finally got to the last step (after 3 hours). And then as I was screwing in one of the last screws, I heard a sound no one wants to hear after 3 hours of toiling over 17 steps of directions, trying not to lose a million tiny screws, applying copious amounts of wood glue and kneeling over with a 45 y/o bad back... CRACK!

Spoiler alert, it wasn't my back.

The whole side panel of my new, beautiful desk cracked. I just sat there for a minute, on the verge of frustrated tears, looking at the ruins of the project I had worked so hard on for the better part of my Sunday. What now? Cry, scream, set the whole freaking thing on fire and call it a day?

Nah. I took a deep breath and reminded myself this project was about amplifing my new space. If I lost my sh** over this desk, how would that help? If I sat there in defeat and decided oh well, guess I never should've tried to do this, how is that helping me amplify this space and my mindset in this space?

It's not. So I dusted myself off, got a drink of water and decided today I would call the company for a replacement panel and then I'll give our handyman, Serge, a call. Problem solved. The company will send me a new panel and Serge will step in and take it from there saving me more frustration and probably a trip to the chiropractor.

It's a lot like business, right? Tiny pieces everywhere, some of them coming together seamlessly, some taking a bit more muscle to fit in the right holes. And sometimes, it all comes apart. But we have to make the decision to keep pushing forward, be ruthless about our mindset and know when to ask for help.

What do you do to keep your mindset in check?
